Minimized driver cognitive load and accelerated global localization by optimizing a multi-display HMI and design system
Next-generation infotainment and navigation ecosystem for a premium global automotive manufacturer.
Generic conceptual mockup used for NDA compliance and project confidentiality.
Role: I worked as a UX/UI Designer on a large navigation team, focusing on multimodal interaction models, multi-display information architecture, and contributing scalable components to a global design system.
Sector: In-car automotive, HMI (Human-Machine Interface) & Infotainment
Process: Partnered closely with product, engineering, and compliance teams to map multi-screen user journeys, designed voice and touch interaction patterns, built flexible UI components for global markets, and aligned all solutions with strict safety regulations.
Impact: Reduced driver distraction through clearer multi-screen layouts, introduced intelligent and timely in-flow guidance to boost feature adoption, and optimized the multi-brand design system to streamline international localization and speed up feature delivery.
Problem
Designing for modern vehicles requires handling massive amounts of real-time data across multiple screens without distracting the driver.
The challenge was to integrate voice and touch interactions seamlessly while ensuring the entire system could scale across multiple global brands and languages, all while working within tight technical constraints and rigid automotive safety compliance laws.
Challenges & Solutions
#1 Driver Distraction in Complex Workflows
Challenge: In-car navigation tasks often require multiple touch interactions, forcing drivers to take their eyes off the road and creating a significant safety risk during high-speed transit.
Solution: Combined AI-powered voice commands and touch interactions to optimize the navigation user flow, creating a seamless multimodal experience that helps drivers focus on the road.
#2 Low Feature Discoverability Under Rigid Constraints
Challenge: Introducing users to new or complex infotainment features typically requires text-heavy onboarding or disruptive tutorials, which are highly impractical and dangerous to engage with while driving.
Solution: Boosted feature adoption and engagement by developing intelligent assistance patterns that deliver relevant, contextual information to drivers exactly when needed.
#3 Information Overload on Multi-Display Dashboards
Challenge: Managing and distributing real-time vehicle data, navigation maps, and safety alerts across complex, multi-display vehicle architectures without overwhelming the driver's visual field.
Solution: Minimized driver cognitive load by defining strict information hierarchies that ensured critical driving metrics remain glanceable, while secondary data is cleanly compartmentalized.
#4 UI Layout Fragmentation Across Global Markets
Challenge: Scaling a single user interface across multiple automotive brands and international regions, where varying multi-language text lengths routinely break fixed component layouts.
Solution: Optimized a global, multi-brand design system by developing highly adaptable components that streamlined multi-language localization and accelerated feature delivery for international markets.
Impact
Safer Driving Experience
Lowered driver cognitive load by keeping critical information easily glanceable across multiple screens and simplifying core workflows.
Higher Feature Engagement
Boosted feature adoption by replacing long, up-front tutorials with intelligent, timely assistance patterns that naturally surface exactly when needed.
Global Scalability
Accelerated international feature delivery and cut down localization friction by standardizing versatile, multi-brand design system components.
Cross-Functional Feasibility
Maintained high design fidelity while meeting strict automotive safety regulations by facilitating alignment across product, engineering, and compliance teams early in the process.
